Project Enhance : Enhancing the Lives of Children with Disabilities through Martial Arts and Creative Arts

Colorss Foundation is currently operating Project Enhance, a one-of-a-kind project for disabled children, with the goal to enhance their physical and mental health, as well as to reduce the negative social stigma and discrimination towards people with disabilities.

This project currently provides therapy sessions to eight children with disabilities through the use of martial arts and creative arts. The physical and mental benefits on these types of therapies have been well studied in developed countries, which include: improving physical strength, muscle control, coordination, discipline, self-esteem, self-confidence, and reducing stress and anxiety, and so on. We plan to run the project for at least one year, as these improvements are gradual but long lasting.

The objective of Project Enhance is to empower children with disabilities by training participants in martial arts and encouraging them to express themselves through creative arts, while educating the general public about disabilities.

Project Enhance is a one of its kind project in India aiming to improve the lives of children with mental and physical disabilities. With the assistance of a karate expert, artist, and psychologists, Project Enhance uses karate and creative arts as tools to promote the physical and mental well-being on children with various types of disabilities, as well as to create a safe environment for disabled and non-disabled children to interact with each other.

Project Evaluation and Outcomes

It is expected that all eight participants of Project Enhance will have gradual improvements in their physical and mental capabilities over time. In particular, the project aims to achieve the following results in one year:

1.      Noticeable improvements in the participants' level of energy, focus and concentration; body and muscle control; flexibility; stamina; breath control; aggression control; and eye and hand coordination;

2.      Increase in the participants' self-confidence and self-esteem;

3.      Increase in mutual understanding and respects through direct interactions with disabled and non-disabled children in the karate lessons;
