'Do Good, Feel Good' initiative

Anand Koti runs a "Do Good, Feel Good" initiative, where 40% of the proceeds from the self-defense workshops are directed to help the efforts of the Colorss Foundation where the under-priveliged females, both young and old, are trained for Free in self-defense. If you wish to see Koti's LinkedIn profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/anandkoti

Eve-teasing, undesired stares, men lurking in dark allies..these are some of the everyday fears that women in India have to live with. With 19 years of martial arts practice and another nine years of experience in training others, Koti has made it his mission to protect women by teaching them self-defense. We are happy to get the support from Koti. You can have a look at their website www.anandkoti.com and their social media accounts: - www.facebook.com/anandkotidotcom | www.twitter.com/anandkoti | www.instagram.com/anandkoti for more information.

Koti, is leading Mission 1000 project which is one of the promising projects at Colorss Foundation, Mission 1000 is focused on training young girls and women in self-defense techniques. Mission 1000 aims to reach out to at least 1000 underprivileged women and girls every year. By equipping each child with self-defense skills, Mission 1000 hopes to tackle the sexual abuse, which include harassment, assault and rape, against women in India. As Mission 1000 believes in providing free-of-charge self-defense workshops, this programme largely relies on donated funds.

Taught by the founder of Colorss himself, Anand Koti, the students have been learning several skills on how to punch, kick and block assaults. Each child has also left each session with a boost in her stamina, self-esteem and confidence.
Mission 1000 makes a difference to the lives of these young women. Those who have completed the Mission 1000 workshops express gratitude in learning self-defense. Some have even taught these skills to their own family members. The daily fear of being harassed is now a thing of the past for many of these young women, who are now more confident in interacting with society. Students undergoing Mission 1000 workshops will leave with a certificate and a new set of skills that they can use to protect themselves and their future. Along with learning kicks, punches, blocks and self-defense techniques the girls also enjoy meditation, which is also the part of the workshop. Meditation has helped the girls release stress.

How the Colorss foundation’s 7-day Online Self Defense classes inspired me!

When it comes to Self Defense I’m pretty paranoid. I worry about a number of different situations that may be very unlikely to happen, but it is always very important to feel safe because today on the streets of this country anything can happen. And therefore, when I read about Colorss foundations’ Seven day online Self-Defense workshop, I was instantly fascinated by the workshop and was very keen on attending it. The best part about the workshop was that it was online. I didn’t have to take out much time from my busy schedule to be physically present at a place for these classes.

The workshop made me understand myself, my fears and my abilities better. I learnt that self-defense is not about getting into fights with others, but about how you can extricate yourself from certain situations, which includes general awareness of the surroundings and the importance of being steady and remaining calm at the same time in a bad situation. We covered things like how to get out of wrist grabs, body grabs, chokes, and as women where our strength comes from. It’s not about getting into a one-on-one fight with the attacker but to create enough impact to get the time to escape and run to a safe place. The best part about the workshop was that every technique was demonstrated with pictures and we could also ask questions and clear our doubts about any of the techniques.

Besides all of this, the workshop also inspired me to get in good shape, as the principle of self-defense involves being ready and fit both mentally and physically. Since those seven days, I’ve regularly been practicing the techniques taught in the workshop. I’m glad I came across such a helpful online workshop. I hope and also encourage Colorss foundation to come up with more such helpful techniques in self-defense.

Sessions on Android based Flag Recognition App

In this increasingly technology driven world it is highly imperative that the kids today get an equal and comfortable opportunity to acquaint themselves to the present day Science scene and are able to make the best of it. Many scientific innovations, in the form of engineered systems and soft-applications, are aimed at providing a better learning experience to the kids. Their use not only promotes a more practical and sturdy education, but also helps the kids develop a sub-conscious ownership of technological ideas. These experiences help them overcome their inhibitions and gain substantial technological exposure so as not to be intimidated by it. Additionally, it helps to nurture their interest in the field by showing them how interesting, fun and accomplishing an outlet Science can be.

Saumya with students

Our demonstration session on the Android based Flag Recognition Application for 5th grade students of Ambedkar Memorial High School was an attempt towards achieving the above said. We started with the thing that 5th graders love the most i.e. drawing. They were each given a drawing sheet and a set of pencil colours/crayons/sketch pens. Next, they were to pick their favourite colour flag and draw it on the sheet. They excitedly drew around 2 to 3 different flags each and were eager to pose with their creations. Once the drawings were done, I got out the android phone with its flag recognition application. We clicked pictures of the flags, cropped them, gave them to the application and got the recognition results as a list of top-10 best matched countries. The students would look at the top-10 options and pick out the country that their flag belonged to.

Students engrossed in drawing the maps

This exercise not only helped them learn about the different countries and flags in a fun way, but also gave them a taste of how a machine can be trained to perform such an activity. The idea is to tickle these young minds and set them thinking. After all, good things start when you begin to think!!

DONATE BOOKS, DELIVER DREAMS - Colorss Foundation

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.”-this great quote by George R.R. Martin in his book A Dance with Dragons says it all.

Donate Books for better future - designed by Monika Mahore
Learning is an indispensable process in our lives and that learning is an inevitable tool for human development. And when it comes to learning, what’s better than a great, gripping book?

Considering this as the bottom line, Colorss Foundation has organized a book donation drive to amass this rich and resourceful treasure of knowledge with the objective of setting up libraries at their schools in Pune and Vadodara. The books can be either in English or in Hindi meant for children ranging from 5th to 10th grade.

Books are conducive in umpteen ways from attaining basic speech skills, boosting logical ability and communication skills to enhanced concentration and discipline. Be it academics, general knowledge, basic skills or hobbies, books aid us in every sphere of our lives. Thus, reading becomes an imperative skill that needs to be inculcated among children at an early age to enhance their quality life.

Unfortunately, not all children are as lucky as to have access to basic amenity as quality education. For this desolate lot, reading good books is a luxury most of them can only dream of. And this is where our role steps in. we and you can make them realize this but the best part is YOU can transform this distant dream into reality for them by just one humble gesture-donating a book!

Yes, it’s as simple as it sounds! All you need to do is send the needful books to the foundation or help us by taking an initiative to run a collection drive in your own city and join us in this laudable cause. What’s more? This small gesture on your part can brighten up scores of oblivious lives. So what are you waiting for? Contact us today at Facebook, Twitter , YouTube or drop us a mail at contact@colorss.org.

A VOICE! - WE CAN MAKE A CHANGE THAT WILL HELP! | Colorss Foundation

A VOICE!

A voice for the little one's,
a voice for a cause,
they are abused, hurt and assaulted.
The harshness of realities entrap them,
leaving them horrified and exploited.
Protected nutshell is broken,
the shrewdness is revealed.
Be it mental, sexual or emotional,
the harassment cannot be healed.
From the cradle to the greenness,
from innocence to maturity,
passage is filled with hardships,
making the journey uneasy.
The beam of light,
becomes a horrible sight
losing the mental aplomb they stand,
instead of learning what is right.
Wide,scary eyes staring
weakens the psyche,
the pressure to perform well,
leads to the closing.
Reaching the adolescence,
is what becomes a sin,
a stranger, an acquaintance or a kin.
For every one of them,
an easy target is all they are,
killing their innocence,
pleasure is what they gain.
Books,which the hands should hold,
have brushes and mops.
The ambition, the heart should focus on,
has the dullness and lost hopes.
Dying are the aspirations,
fading are the beliefs.
Anticipating for a change,
is here I appeal
Broaden your thoughts,
widen your sight.
Give them what they deserve,
they have the right to live,
raising a voice against child abuse
WE CAN MAKE A CHANGE THAT WILL HELP!

Be your own hero! - FREE 7-days online Self-Defense workshops for women | Colorss

Be your own hero! @ 6th Jan 2014; 9:00 am UTC+05:30
With Colorss foundation’s 7-day Online Self Defense classes

In today’s world, women are faced with danger and violence throughout their lives. We don’t choose to be a victim, but we can choose how we respond to these situations. Self-Defense is about learning the basic physical skills to be able to fight off attackers and reach safety. But it’s also about gaining empowerment and confidence. It’s about standing up and saying, I can protect myself, I refuse to be intimidated.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the time nor money to attend self-defense classes. So the Colorss foundation, a NGO based in Baroda, Pune and Ajmer in India, has come up with a novel idea: an online, 7 day self-defense workshop, to enable all women, from across the globe, to learn the necessary skills to remain calm and fight back against attackers.  The classes will take place on 6th Jan 2014 via the Colorss foundation’s facebook page [events section], in an interactive fashion.

Click on this link [https://www.facebook.com/events/255529674604610/]  to directly go to the event section - don't forget to join and invite those whom you feel will benefit from this workshop.

Participants can easily ask questions to the teacher via the internet, and benefit from the knowledge imparted from the comfort of their home, wherever they are in the world.

Join in, and become your own hero !

A glimpse of Self-defense workshops | Colorss Foundation

In India, girls are forced to battle for their fundamental right to live, from the day they are born. Because of social stigma, women in India are often considered inferior and suffer torment and persecution for no reason other than their gender. From a young age, most local women are taught about the dangers they will inevitably face during their lives. Unfortunately, being aware is no longer enough.

While it is by no means an altogether solution for the terrible issue of violence against women, providing Indian women with self-defense training is a great step forward in order to protect their basic freedoms and permit the ability to walk through the streets unaccompanied without fear.

Colorss' have conducted self-defense workshops for different corporate:

Participant sharing her thoughts after the workshops

Colorss Foundation, a NGO based in Baroda, Pune and Ajmer is launching women’s self-defense classes to empower the women of India and provide the skills to remain calm and fight back against attackers, if this is ever required. If there is one thing that the December 16 attack has achieved, it is in spreading the reality that no one is safe from these types of assaults. Every woman in India, through no fault of her own, is a potential victim.

Colorss’ self-defense classes are for working women, university students and children, with no prior experience necessary. The classes are designed to take part 2-3 times a week, with groups of 10-15 participants in Pune. The classes may take place at your personal residence with a group of 10-15 participants, for the convenience of participants.

While the most obvious benefit of these self-defense classes is the ability to defend yourself against an attacker, there are also numerous peripheral benefits, such as increased confidence and mental development. At Colorss, we strive to give women the physical and mental strength to surpass any challenges.

It is our goal to empower the women of India to have the confidence to live completely fulfilling lives.

Colorss Foundation strives to build a better future for the disadvantaged children and women. The foundation aspires to build a family of like-minded people whose motive would be to empower socially deprived children and women with qualities like self-confidence, responsibility, and self-esteem, at the same time ensuring that the disadvantaged children complete their school education. It has also been striving hard to inspire and transform individuals and volunteers to take action and serve the society and in turn give back to the communities where we belong.

Launch of E-zine created by the children from disadvantaged community

On 13th June 2013 we launched the E-zine - created by the children from disadvantaged community - Baroda, Gujarat. E-zine is the output of a Colorss Foundation project - ‘Colors of Life’. ‘Colors of Life’ uses technology for lowering school dropouts. Children write essays on specially chosen topics that trigger brain stimulation and create curiosity. These topics are published to E-zine, this significantly increases their self-esteem. You can click the link to read the E-zine.

When the E-zine was launched it thrilled me thoroughly and when I saw my photograph in the E-zine I was very very happy. That particular moment is very precious and I can’t explain it. When the cartoon strip competition started I was little scared, unsure about my performance. However, when we got the topic ‘Environment’ I was able to understand what I will put in the cartoon strip. It’s a thoroughly great experience that we had. I am very happy and thankful to you all’

Colorss goes international with first research work published

A study carried on musculoskeletal health among urban poor pupils in Western India by Colorss’ Foundation research division, Risachi, has been published in the International Journal of Management and Behavioural Sciences, IJMBS.

The acclaimed study, the very first to be conducted in India, was the initiative and hard work of two researchers: Pavithra Rajan, a community physiotherapist and Anand Koti, the founder of the Colorss Foundation.

According to the article co-authored by Rajan and Koti, bad postures and ergonomics –the study on how things interact with the human body – are prevalent during adolescence and earlier studies have shown that this could lead to musculoskeletal aches and pains in later life. To back this hypothesis – idea, a pilot study was carried out across selected urban slums in India. Using focus group discussions and a set of practical controlled school activities, the findings obtained, confirmed that this undervalued problem does exist.

During the study carried out in July 2012 in Vadodara, Gujarat, India, school children in urban slums were sampled and congregated into two separate groups based on gender for focus group discussions. Information gathered from these group discussions were used as base to design two research tools further used to assess the ergonomics of boys and girls in schools in five different activities. The activities range from reading a book, to lifting books from floor level, to sitting on a chair, to carrying a backpack, to using a computer. Data collected from each activity and compared with others all show that these activities actually caused maximum discomfort to most of the children.

Effects of musculoskeletal health problem

Interpreting the results, Rajan and Koti, found out that out of the 64 children who participated in the controlled study, 17 experienced musculoskeletal pains around the lower back, ankle and foot, knee and at the neck as well. Referring back to an earlier study conducted elsewhere on musculoskeletal health, the two researchers noted that musculoskeletal pain in this group – adolescence had been identified as a major public health problem and could be one of the causes of school absenteeism. In further analysis it was also discovered that some of the children could not take part in some activities at school simply as a result of this musculoskeletal ache and pain.

Before concluding the study sponsored by some individuals of goodwill and assisted by volunteers, Rajan and Koti stressed that it is important to plan cost effective and preventive strategies to bridge the problem from manifesting in this juvenile population who they say are equally the pillar of the future of India. Such strategies, according to them, may reduce the cost of treatment of musculoskeletal aches and pain on India’s health system that is already overburdened by other health issues.

After this groundbreaking publication, the Risachi research team has been burning the candles at both ends working on other big projects. So far, another research work has been approved and is due for publication in June 2013. The research teams also have plans to extend more projects on musculoskeletal health across India, but are relying heavily on the kind contributions from donors as well volunteers, especially students to join them carry out research on a vast scale.

At the moment Risachi projects are sponsored by individual donors, but Rajan and Koti are optimistic that donor organisations and individual donors would soon come on board as more and more research work get published. Support us and donate to make us strong. Contact us

Colorss 1st International Research Paper Publication

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. At Colorss, we believe in doing things differently as well as doing different things. It was during one casual visit to the school in Vadodara that Mr. Anand Koti realized that some of the school children seem to be suffering from pains at tender age of 12 years. That was only the beginning of some ground breaking knowledge dissemination projects that came under the umbrella of “Risachi”- the research wing of Colorss Foundation that came into being in July 2012.

The Published Research Paper - snapshot

Dr. Pavithra Rajan, a community physiotherapist with her graduate degree in Kinesiology and community rehabilitation from Canada, was invited to conduct a workshop on ergonomics for the slum women in the Sanjay Nagar slums in Vadodara, Gujarat. There seemed to be an urgent need to develop a tool to examine the ergonomic behavior of not only the mothers residing in these slums but also the school children – both boys and girls. Risachi was officially launched in July 2012 – this led to the start of the three-pronged community research survey. The first project was to look into the musculoskeletal health problems that the community women and school children face in Vadodara, Gujarat, and suggesting cost effective solutions for the same. The second project was done approximately six months after the first and it looked at the effectiveness of the intervention workshop held in the first project. This project was accepted for presentation at the 7th International Conference of Management and Behavioral Sciences in March 2013 at Delhi, India. Out of the many conference papers, this research work was chosen to be published as a full paper in the Third Volume of the International Journal of Management and Behavioral Sciences – click here to read the paper.  The third phase of the project looked at the ergonomic problems in the slum school children in Pune, India.

The team at Risachi consists of volunteers from diverse backgrounds- each contributing in their unique but substantial way. Dr. Pavithra Rajan heads Risachi. Mr. Anand Koti is the research co-ordinator. There are many volunteers who aid with the data collection and data entry. While one research work is published in one of the top international journals, other research work has been submitted to other renowned journals and is under review.

The major crisis that Risachi faces right now is funds. With the wing being run solely by volunteers, it becomes difficult to design ambitious projects and ensure their smooth progression toward completion without adequate funds. While we appreciate all the volunteer help that you can provide us, what would be equally valued are your donations that could help us put our ideas into practice! Please help spread the word so that the modest work of Risachi can reach new heights!

“Who says you can have problems and you can’t smile also?”

Definitely you can…I saw and learnt this from these small kids who although came from a weak socioeconomic background, often separated families still had a smile on their faces and zeal to learn and change the way their life was.

While they were introducing themselves I noticed that they had family problems, e. g death of a parent or separated families. Most of the mothers worked in other houses doing the household chores to earn a living or fathers worked in factories or buildings as laborers.

It was an urge to teach small children which made me to join Colorss as a volunteer. My task which seemed to be very easy to me initially turned out to be a challenge for me. I was supposed to take a 45 min class, making children of class 6-9 standard write articles on a few topics.

Priyanka teaching the girl students at our Project Enhance - Pune
I started with an article on My Ambition, where I had not only to explain the meaning of ambition to children but also had to assist each of them in framing sentences ,making them spell every word properly and translating their thoughts from Hindi to English. This took 30 min for me and there was hardly any time left for any other activity. It was a kind of surprise for me to see children of 8th grade unable to  spell  “will”  “have”  “doctor”  “because”.  I felt the presence of a loop hole in the education system where students of an English medium school were not well versed in spellings and general English.

I thought of doing it another way. Next day I divided them into teams and told them to ask spellings from the opponent team. This sense of competition made some of them to find difficult words from their text books such as “environment” and learn them. This little effort of the children was encouraging for me. I also introduced some games in the class such as “Bring a thing” where students had to bring specific objects from their teammates such as “A black Reynolds pen or a paper boat”. Although I could not work for a long time as my vacations were going to be over, but it was an experience I would cherish forever.Something definitely needs to be done somewhere and Colorss is an attempt to do it.

After joining Colorss as a volunteer, with Anand sir’s support I was more than comfortable and enjoyed every bit of work. Anand sir’s briefing of everything about children, their background, talents, general behavioral tendencies were helpful to know children better. I would like to thank Anand Sir for giving me the opportunity and believing in me. It was something very different and satisfying I could have done in 4 years of my college life. I enjoyed it and learnt a lot from it.

Volunteering at Colorss

Volunteers are the constant support to Colorss. But, what exactly are the volunteers doing? How are they doing it? and why are they doing it! These are all those infinite questions that many people think about or ask.  Well,  it's better that we hear the volunteers sharing their experiences! It gives more clarity to the subject 'volunteering' and the 'content' of joy felt by them.

This video would also help all those new volunteers/interns who are planning to support Colorss. Watch this video wherein our volunteers are sharing themselves.  As Colorss continues to make great strides on the social front, let’s take a vow to contribute in whatsoever manner possible to reach out to people in our communities and societies to enhance, empower and energize them.

"If you want love or if you want to give back love”, then you are all set to join the social bandwagon!

We are always there to answer your questions – we are here to make things simple.  Are you joining us! Why don’t you share us – it’s also a great volunteering service you can do! Well the choice is absolutely yours!

About Colorss Foundation...

Who are we! This post would talk about the origin of Colorss, its founder member, vision and mission.

Origin:

Lack of education and resources, dearth of infrastructure and facilities, poor or in fact no access in some cases, are issues that still remain and continue to haunt a traditional Indian setting. Every individual realizes this at some instance or the other but the concerned action is most often shelved and remains to be, due to various reasons. While this process continued, there were others who nourished the thought and gave it food. There came up social institutions, non-profit organizations, self-funded and self-run societies which realized the necessity and importance to empower the nation and do whatever they could. Colorss was born too!

Mr. Anand Koti, Founder Colorss Foundation
Anand, Founder, Colorss Foundation holds a Masters in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management from Bhavans College of Communication and Management. He also has done his Masters in Hospital and Health Management from Symbiosis Centre of Health Care. He is a Graduate in Industrial Psychology from MSU, Vadodara. He has extensively worked for social causes and has been part of many community oriented projects before he founded Colorss in 2008. He is also a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Karate which exhibits his commitment and discipline. Now, Anand solely manages the operations of Colorss and its projects and is a true source of inspiration to all the budding social entrepreneurs out there.

Colorss Foundation was the outcome of the socio-centric and humanitarian thought process of its founder Mr. Anand Koti. Anand’s passion and dedication to bring in a massive social change in the society, to drive this social change by imparting education using creative and innovative methods brought Colorss into existence in 2008. Since then many action driven and research oriented projects have come into existence here and have been instrumental in achieving the purpose of this mission. As Colorss continues to make great strides on the social front, let’s take a vow to contribute in whatsoever manner possible to reach out to people in our communities and societies to enhance, empower and energize them. Colorss is present in Baroda, Gujarat and in Pune, Maharashtra.

Vision:

Warren Bennis was right when he said “Vision animates, inspires and transforms purpose into action”. Colorss was set up with a purpose – to empower and develop the underprivileged children in the society and to make them ideal and value-driven individuals. And since its inception, Colorss has been working towards its vision, thus contributing in whatsoever manner possible to strengthen the deprived communities and get them in closer proximity to what may seem alien or new to them. It has also been striving hard to inspire and transform individuals and volunteers to take action and serve the society and in turn give back to the communities where we belong.

Mission:

Colorss is currently working towards setting up an educative and resourceful environment for the socially deprived children, which will help them complete their basic education. Its founder, the supporting organizations, individuals and volunteers are working with dedication and devotion to make its vision a reality. On the road towards achieving its goals, Colorss would be more than happy to absorb like minded individuals on board their efforts to support them in whatsoever manner possible. In the words of its founder, Anand Koti ”If you want love or if you want to give back love”, then you are all set to join the social bandwagon! -> contact@colorss.org | emailcolorss@gmail.com | www.facebook.com/colorssfoundation | www.colorss.org
