Self Defense Workshops - to empower the women of India | Colorss Foundation

In India, girls are forced to battle for their fundamental right to live, from the day they are born. Because of social stigma, women in India are often considered inferior and suffer torment and persecution for no reason other than their gender. From a young age, most local women are taught about the dangers they will inevitably face during their lives. Unfortunately, being aware is no longer enough.

While it is by no means an altogether solution for the terrible issue of violence against women, providing Indian women with self-defense training is a great step forward in order to protect their basic freedoms and permit the ability to walk through the streets unaccompanied without fear.

Colorss Foundation, a NGO based in Baroda, Pune and Ajmer is launching women’s self-defense classes to empower the women of India and provide the skills to remain calm and fight back against attackers, if this is ever required. If there is one thing that the December 16 attack has achieved, it is in spreading the reality that no one is safe from these types of assaults. Every woman in India, through no fault of her own, is a potential victim.

Colorss’ self-defense classes are for working women, university students and children, with no prior experience necessary. The classes are designed to take part 2-3 times a week, with groups of 10-15 participants in Pune. The classes may take place at your personal residence with a group of 10-15 participants, for the convenience of participants.

Anand Koti, the foundation’s director, will be conducting the classes. Anand has been practicing martial arts for over 15 years and has a 2^nd degree black belt in Karate, which demonstrates his commitment and discipline. In addition, Anand also possesses an undergraduate degree in Industrial Psychology and Masters degrees in Health Management and Industrial Relations and Personnel Management.

This unique combination of education and passion for martial arts has provided Anand with the perfect blend of skills to successfully pass his knowledge on to students. Under Anand’s supervision, many children from the Pune region have already benefited from Project Enhance, another initiative of the Colorss Foundation. Project Enhance involved providing underprivileged children of the region with martial arts and creative arts classes. The results of Project Enhance have been overwhelmingly positive. In addition to building the physical strength and stamina of the participants, Project Enhance also boosted their self-esteem and confidence.

While the most obvious benefit of these self-defense classes is the ability to defend yourself against an attacker, there are also numerous peripheral benefits, such as increased confidence and mental development. At Colorss, we strive to give women the physical and mental strength to surpass any challenges.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, there were 24,206 cases of rape registered in India during 2011, but this is suspected to be a major under-representation of the true figure and of the problem at hand.

The worst reaction from this case would be for women to remain indoors, further restrict their activities and escalate the oppression they already face on a daily basis. This should be used as an opportunity to empower the women of India – for them to stand up and assert themselves.

It is in the hands of the government to make a legitimate stance on the issue of violence towards women and make widespread changes throughout the country; however, basic self-defense is a great step forward for the women on India.

“Who says you can have problems and you can’t smile also?”

Definitely you can…I saw and learnt this from these small kids who although came from a weak socioeconomic background, often separated families still had a smile on their faces and zeal to learn and change the way their life was.

While they were introducing themselves I noticed that they had family problems, e. g death of a parent or separated families. Most of the mothers worked in other houses doing the household chores to earn a living or fathers worked in factories or buildings as laborers.

It was an urge to teach small children which made me to join Colorss as a volunteer. My task which seemed to be very easy to me initially turned out to be a challenge for me. I was supposed to take a 45 min class, making children of class 6-9 standard write articles on a few topics.

I started with an article on My Ambition, where I had not only to explain the meaning of ambition to children but also had to assist each of them in framing sentences ,making them spell every word properly and translating their thoughts from Hindi to English. This took 30 min for me and there was hardly any time left for any other activity. It was a kind of surprise for me to see children of 8th grade unable to  spell  “will”  “have”  “doctor”  “because”.  I felt the presence of a loop hole in the education system where students of an English medium school were not well versed in spellings and general English.

I thought of doing it another way. Next day I divided them into teams and told them to ask spellings from the opponent team. This sense of competition made some of them to find difficult words from their text books such as “environment” and learn them. This little effort of the children was encouraging for me. I also introduced some games in the class such as “Bring a thing” where students had to bring specific objects from their teammates such as “A black Reynolds pen or a paper boat”. Although I could not work for a long time as my vacations were going to be over, but it was an experience I would cherish forever.Something definitely needs to be done somewhere and Colorss is an attempt to do it. 

After joining Colorss as a volunteer, with Anand sir’s support I was more than comfortable and enjoyed every bit of work. Anand sir’s briefing of everything about children, their background, talents, general behavioral tendencies were helpful to know children better. I would like to thank Anand Sir for giving me the opportunity and believing in me. It was something very different and satisfying I could have done in 4 years of my college life. I enjoyed it and learnt a lot from it.

‘See Green’ - determined to be a fine integration of proposed solutions for some of the critical issues in the society! | Colorss Foundation

Every New Year brings in new opportunities for people, avenues to go by their resolutions and ways to achieve their dream. But, unfortunately some people get lost while looking around for such opportunities or probing for avenues and paths. Here, in Colorss we sincerely make an attempt to intertwine the right people with the right opportunity and further go on to create hope and strength in the people who will then pave way for a healthy society. Synonymous to this, starting this January, Colorss is coming up with a project – ‘See Green’ which is determined to be a fine integration of proposed solutions for some of the critical issues in the society. To give it a personal touch, we are creating an opportunity for each one of ‘you’ reading this to contribute in whatsoever manner possible to light hope and give strength to empower someone out there to stand up and live their life themselves. Read on to understand more about See Green. 

The Objectives of the Project:

1.     Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: We are appealing to educational institutions, organizations and individuals to donate old clothes. Thus bringing in, the ideas of 3R’s – Reduce, Reuse & Recycle.

2.     Production of Hand Stitched Bags: The collected old clothes will be distributed among women in rural and underprivileged households of Vadodara, who will then produce hand stitched bags made of these old clothes.

3.     Empowering Women: These bags would later be sold for a nominal price to interested vendors in and around Vadodara. The income earned would be given to the women, thus empowering them and improving their financial stability.

4.     Plastic Free: By encouraging people to use cloth bags, we will be contributing our share to building an eco-friendly environment, free of plastic.

What can you do?

1.     If you are in Vadodara, then do take a casual drive to drop by your old clothes.

2.     For schools, we have a collection drive that has been planned and the respective schools are expected to intimate the same to the students.

3.     If you are not around but still would like to contribute, then do spread the word about this project on twitter @colorss or alternately on G+.

4.     You can go a step ahead to encourage volunteers and like-minded people in your neighborhood to come up with an initiative as this one.

5.     Choose to fund for this project by being a sponsor.

Adding a Little “Color” to my life!!!!

It was September of 2012 that I met this old friend of mine, by sheer chance, after a long gap of close to 12 years and boy it did turn out to be the best catch up sessions I have had in years. Before you jump the gun, No – it was not that we were the best of friends or were inseparable when we were in touch in the nineties, but yes – our association was definitely way better than those of preferred acquaintances. So it was not about discussing those lovely summers that we spent playing together, but more about some wonderful things that he has been doing over the past few years. It was about COLORSS, the organization or should I say the institution that he founded in 2008 and the tireless efforts that he and his team have been putting in to get it where it is today. This was the same time when most of us, in the same group as teenagers in the nineties, were busy raking in the moolah for ourselves somewhere out there in the marketplace. Not that I am feeling bad about what I did and achieved over the years, but I am definitely happier and filled with a sense of pride at what Anand Koti, this friend of mine dared to do - give up a corporate career and set up Colorss – the foundation.

With a central idea that children are indeed the colors in our life and recognizing the fact that not all these colors are as bright and impactful as they need to be, he set out with his dynamic team to ensure that they help rediscover the radiance of the “colors” lost in the cloud of economic and social hopelessness. Their simple idea, as I was able to understand, was to empower these socially underprivileged children by helping build a better self esteem, creating a sense of pride in them and preparing them for greater responsibilities in life. There were no free meals, clothing or shelter on offer, but there was a promise of a better life where one could live with the head held high.  Their projects right from “Colors of Life” which talks about developing faculties like writing and expressing through painting or “Urja” which aims at developing a vocational skill or my favorite “Enhance” which uses techniques like martial arts and other creative skills to help develop self esteem in an individual were very different from the ones usually seen or experienced. So along with education, these children are provided with avenues where they could put their evident or latent skills to good use to discover their inner potentials and feel good about themselves. They are guided on the importance of honing these skills with the right kind of focus and discipline which holds them in good stead for whatever they decide to take up in the future. I have always believed, that great individuals achieve greatness in whatever they do, and greatness is a direct function of confidence which in turn is directly proportional to one’s state of happiness. And generally, one is happy when one feels good about oneself i.e. when one has a high self esteem. I am not a psychology expert and I am sure Anand will have a few thoughts about my ramblings considering his psychology background, but I see things in a certain manner and this manner compels me to believe that Colorss has hit the nail right on the head when it comes to understanding the current socio-economic context of our country and has come up with some unique and thought provoking projects to address some of the key issues faced by the socially less privileged.

Why only socially less privileged, helping any child develop his or her self esteem is one of the best service possible in today’s day and times, but I have to say that it is a great start. Another wonderful thing about these projects is the long term vision which makes it all the more challenging. When you see so many projects with a vision and results that are short or sometimes even immediate term in nature, one tends to believe that that they are more effective than some of the others that Colorss has set out to achieve. Why outsiders, even the stakeholders including the benefactors and the beneficiaries question this and it is in the process of answering these questions that the unwavering focus of these strong willed members of team Colorss is called upon. I was privileged to meet up with a few of them and really am in awe of their enthusiasm and dedication and the sheer love for what they have set out to do. While I absolutely mean no disrespect to any effort taken by any other foundation, I have to confess that education, self reliance and a higher sense of self esteem are right up there as far as my personal priorities are concerned. So here I am now, trying to find ways and means to being useful to Anand and his wonderful foundation. As I sit here and contemplate, I am sure Anand and his wonderful force is out there in some community centre of theirs, in a less privileged part of the cities they operate in, trying to empower and create a new society. Thank you Colorss and thank you Anand for letting me be part of your journey. I will keep doing my bit, in whatever way I am able to for I have experienced the ecstasy of “Colorss” in my life.

Celebrating 4 Colorss-filled Years! | Colorss Foundation

On the 15^th of September this year, Pune was witness to the 4^th Anniversary Celebrations of Colorss. Colorss foundation commemorated this occasion by organizing a flashmob [on 14^th of September 2012] to perform at Symbiosis Law School around noon time. Later that evening around 7pm, the same mob performed in Pheonix Marketcity, Pune.

The flashmob was organised by the combined efforts of almost 50 participants who were all proud of the fact that they had managed to come up with an innovative idea to spread their cause. As Sweksha Ballabh puts it, “From practicing all day and night for the flash mob, to performing it in front of over 100 people, the excitement that this event has brought to our lives is splendid. The event was very well planned and organized by an amazing team of volunteers. I am so glad that I got a chance to be a part of such a noble event”.

Aditi, who is a first year student in Symbiosis chimes in, “15^th September, 2012 was when we realized that working for a good cause can come with loads of fun, frolic, and dance. It was not just about the dance in the end or the socializing that was inevitable, it came with immense satisfaction. Having worked with Colorss Foundation in its various other projects, this one was definitely awesome”.

Even the audience were left amazed by the team’s performance. A participant who was witness to the flashmob stated that, “The flash mob was a unique way to create awareness about the cause and about Colorss Foundation. It was an inspiration to all those who took part”. Some of the many faces behind this event include Nikita Puri, Abraham Verghese, Dhiraj Khatri, Stuti Prasad and Nikita Lamba.

The next day afternoon, Colorss foundation continued the celebrations by organising a Walkathon from Symbiosis Law School to Pune Central, University Road. The Walkathon which covered a distance of approximately 5 kilometres saw about 50 participants who covered this distance with the knowledge that their effort was spent in raising awareness about a worthy cause.

Although the celebrations are in the past now, Colorss Foundation has found a new lease of life in all the efforts that its volunteers put in for the event and is now fuelled with the positive energy it created to go through another year filled with the aim of reaching out to more underprivileged kids!

‘See-green’ – an initiative to encourage use of eco-degradable bags instead of plastic bags

As an intern to Colorss, Mr. Aditya Gupta a Doon School Alumnus took up his own initiative of working on a project that would benefit a community and lead to increase use of eco-friendly bags in his locality. Aditya has a concrete plan and he intends to take this to a larger scale - as it involves three interesting and worthy factors: 

Recycle: in form of donation of old clothes from urban households.

Empowering women: bulk production of hand-stitched cloth bags which can improve their financial stability and their self-esteem too.

Going plastic free: encouraging use of eco-friendly bags instead of plastic bags.

Aditya did the needful data-collection, he encouraged people to donate old clothes as well as gave environment-friendly tips to the localities he covered. This simple idea of a business opportunity with easy availability of raw material motivated the women to work for an extra income. Aditya demonstrated leadership qualities when we saw how he got around and made the finished product.

His next challenge was to sell the bags to the vendors.  Organic friendly shops like Jatan Vasundhara stores in Vadodara regularly purchased the product. This was a rewarding achievement and we did see the joy in his eyes. More impressive than this -it was the compassion and heart with which Aditya worked for the benefit of the deprived women.

Aditya has been truly able to justify the entire process of manufacturing to sales; his dedication and focus is commendable. Aditya came to us as he wanted his project to have a larger impact. Seeing how contemporary and relevant this issue is Colorss Foundation will do it’s very best to take “See-green” to the next level.
