Pen-powerment | Educate the Girl Child

Everyone always says that pens are mightier than swords. Before every battle fought, it’s the general who is the head behind the strategy. Education itself is a debatable term, according to me. Learning text books is a start to a formal education but hands-on experience in different fields of learning can also be considered as education. Another quote is that if you educate a mother, you educate the nation. Mothers are those entities who every child sees from the beginning of his/her life. We learn from her and our perception builds from what we see. A mother is a mother, nonetheless but an educated mother guides her child strategically through their life battles. Apart from fulfilling a successful role of being a mother, a woman has every right to educate herself and conquer her dreams.

In a patriarchal society, there are still areas that have the taboo of educating their girl and even if they do admit them to schools, the girls are a victim of early marriage or forced marriage. The cities have a completely different scenario. Women are still encouraged to get married as soon as they are of an appropriate (early or mid 20s) age. Now, you might ask, why is it important for women to study? Number one and only, the question is irrelevant in its own. It’s not about women studying, rather its
every human being’s right to education. Every man and woman needs to educate themselves. The question of ‘why’ cannot be considered in any circumstances.

Education doesn’t need to be from text books rather lessons that would help in life. Education would not only help women but would help the nation to grow as the workforce would increase and so will the economy and standard of life. When you’re educating half the world population, you are increasing the world by a notch. So, anyone who believes in gender equality should never ask why a woman should study, rather the question should be how can I help a woman study? Nothing is a better feeling than helping another human being to flourish. Remember, women are human first. Genders are a social construction for discriminating and voicing superiority, and avoiding this superficial thought could might as well be the first step to a better education.

India: Celebrating 69 years of Independence

Today, we are a nation that stands tall- the world’s largest democracy, to match our strides with the Americas and Englands of the world in every sphere. When the chorus of Cassandras rise, it helps us reflect on where we were 69 years ago, and where we are today. What reason do we have not to feel anything but proud of our brilliant accomplishments?

Looking back at our past, we can get a notion of how hard we have struggled to reach this zenith of success. Our freedom-fighters, with their relentless toil, have earned our country’s independence.

Why is it that India never invaded other countries? Surely not because we are weak. It is because we, the Indians have been blessed with the gift of tolerance. Despite unfulfilled promises, grim prognoses and failed messiahs, the Republic has endured everything thrown at its face. It is surely a miracle-the way India has withstood and surmounted all the odds-the chronic and extant tides of highs and lows that has besieged it, time and again. India has vanquished all evils with her brandishing sword of tolerance.

Keeping in mind the philosophies and ideals of the heroes of yester years, some of them fulfilled, some of them not, we, the youngsters of tomorrow, must take up the responsibility to work hard to make this a better India. Our aspirations for India should be more corrective than progressive.

Heroism should be a quality to strive for and patriotism should be an awareness, not a mere emotional display reserved for the Independence Day alone. We should all aspire to purge the country’s wounds and purify it to an extent where the world looks up to us and exclaims “Saare jahan se achha!”, indeed.

We all look forward to a day when every Indian’s dream is transformed to reality. And to achieve this, we need to shape the impressionable young minds by urging them to pick up their pens. Be it the young boy who toils by the candle-light or the little girl who walks miles to go to school,  every effort made towards education will lead to a brighter future for the individuals, the society and the country as a whole.

Colorss Foundation , an NGO based in Baroda, Gujarat and having its presence in Pune, Maharashtra in India aims to do just that by helping children become more independent and empowered through projects based in arts, technology and science.

It decided to do its bit in contributing to the spirit of Independence Day this year by organizing a drawing competition for its students. The topic- Swachh Bharat & Independence Day. The cleanliness campaign championed by our Honourable Prime Minister is perhaps one of utmost importance because in order to ignite the youth of our nation to build a better India, we need to provide them with a clean and healthy environment for their holistic development. The youth can carry forward this mission as a regular project and pass it on to the generations to come because we want this initiative to last forever.  By inculcating this idea of a cleaner India, Colorss Foundation achieved something spectacular-it helped in motivating the youngsters to come up with creative ideas to present to the world a cleaner India.

Apart from that, this Independence Day, Colorss also released one more edition of its E-zine (project Colors Of Life) which was highly praised and appreciated by the school authorities. Vision ignites minds. What we need today are great minds-great visionaries who can inspire an entire generation! We should take a solemn oath to keep the lamp of knowledge burning bright and give our everything to help build a better and brighter India. Let our sweat and toil create Agnis that can annihilate evil!

Friends, Indians, countrymen-come let us join forces and work towards this goal of unleashing the power within. Let us go to dust as proud citizens of this glorious nation, to rise again and revel in its splendour.

'Do Good, Feel Good' initiative

Anand Koti runs a "Do Good, Feel Good" initiative, where 40% of the proceeds from the self-defense workshops are directed to help the efforts of the Colorss Foundation where the under-priveliged females, both young and old, are trained for Free in self-defense. If you wish to see Koti's LinkedIn profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/anandkoti

Eve-teasing, undesired stares, men lurking in dark allies..these are some of the everyday fears that women in India have to live with. With 19 years of martial arts practice and another nine years of experience in training others, Koti has made it his mission to protect women by teaching them self-defense. We are happy to get the support from Koti. You can have a look at their website www.anandkoti.com and their social media accounts: - www.facebook.com/anandkotidotcom | www.twitter.com/anandkoti | www.instagram.com/anandkoti for more information.

Koti, is leading Mission 1000 project which is one of the promising projects at Colorss Foundation, Mission 1000 is focused on training young girls and women in self-defense techniques. Mission 1000 aims to reach out to at least 1000 underprivileged women and girls every year. By equipping each child with self-defense skills, Mission 1000 hopes to tackle the sexual abuse, which include harassment, assault and rape, against women in India. As Mission 1000 believes in providing free-of-charge self-defense workshops, this programme largely relies on donated funds.

Taught by the founder of Colorss himself, Anand Koti, the students have been learning several skills on how to punch, kick and block assaults. Each child has also left each session with a boost in her stamina, self-esteem and confidence.
Mission 1000 makes a difference to the lives of these young women. Those who have completed the Mission 1000 workshops express gratitude in learning self-defense. Some have even taught these skills to their own family members. The daily fear of being harassed is now a thing of the past for many of these young women, who are now more confident in interacting with society. Students undergoing Mission 1000 workshops will leave with a certificate and a new set of skills that they can use to protect themselves and their future. Along with learning kicks, punches, blocks and self-defense techniques the girls also enjoy meditation, which is also the part of the workshop. Meditation has helped the girls release stress.

Gift Self-Defense workshop to women/girls & Make them STRONG

Gift Self-Defense workshop to women/girls who can't afford learning these skills and neither have the privilege of feeling safe 24x7. The male-hood needs to be groomed and trained on respecting the womanhood. Parents, schools and life-values needs to be pressed in properly. Waiting for the society values to get unlearned will take time.

However, learning a skill to protect the self and the body is no harm and it should be encouraged. It actually increases confidence and builds the strength among the girls/women. It not only promotes stronger physiology it also helps at psychological level. One of the promising projects at Colorss Foundation, Mission 1000 is focused on training young girls and women in self-defense techniques. Karate is one thing which will increase our confidence and make our body fitter and stronger. It has helped me a lot after learning Karate. This has given me strength to face someone in any situation. Earlier if I used to go alone, me and my parents we used to worry. But now we all are more confident. I have changed a lot in positive way after learning Karate. I would like to thank our school teachers who thought about us and arranged for Karate classes. I would also like to thank Pooja Teacher and Karate Sir for their efforts.  Manisha V one of our beneficiary.

Colorss Foundation conducts self-defense workshops for working women and school girls

In the country today, we see an unprecedented revolution emerging, a revolution for change in the way in which women security has been seen. There is an increasing concern for the safety of women in the country. And such is the need of the hour. With the increasing attempts on outraging the modesty of women in the country, it is the duty of not only the individual being attacked but every other citizen of the nation to ensure safety of women around them.

We see so many companies today striving to ensure the safety of their women employees. The way in which the corporate world has accepted its’ responsibility towards their female members is commendable. We see people from all walks of life joining hands to support the cause. In going by its’ tradition of supporting any positive wave of change, the Colorss Foundation conducts self-defense workshops for working women. While it is by no means an altogether solution for attacks on women, self-defense training is a great way for women to protect their basic freedom, for example, acting against any violation of their personal space. The learning that a woman may get from such a workshop would allow her to freely roam around the street without being afraid of being groped physically. For a working woman learning this technique would help her in a situation where she has to leave late at night after work or has to travel alone for work..

Besides the physical benefits such as increased body flexibility, better shape, better body control and discipline, such a workshop would also have Psychological benefits such as increased self-awareness, increased confidence, feeling of security, reduced anxiety. Working women are usually burdened with work related pressures and home related pressures, in such a scenario, the least an employer can do is to make them feel safer physically as well as psychologically. And that is precisely why a self-defense workshop is recommended for every company.

Sessions on Android based Flag Recognition App

In this increasingly technology driven world it is highly imperative that the kids today get an equal and comfortable opportunity to acquaint themselves to the present day Science scene and are able to make the best of it. Many scientific innovations, in the form of engineered systems and soft-applications, are aimed at providing a better learning experience to the kids. Their use not only promotes a more practical and sturdy education, but also helps the kids develop a sub-conscious ownership of technological ideas. These experiences help them overcome their inhibitions and gain substantial technological exposure so as not to be intimidated by it. Additionally, it helps to nurture their interest in the field by showing them how interesting, fun and accomplishing an outlet Science can be.

Saumya with students

Our demonstration session on the Android based Flag Recognition Application for 5th grade students of Ambedkar Memorial High School was an attempt towards achieving the above said. We started with the thing that 5th graders love the most i.e. drawing. They were each given a drawing sheet and a set of pencil colours/crayons/sketch pens. Next, they were to pick their favourite colour flag and draw it on the sheet. They excitedly drew around 2 to 3 different flags each and were eager to pose with their creations. Once the drawings were done, I got out the android phone with its flag recognition application. We clicked pictures of the flags, cropped them, gave them to the application and got the recognition results as a list of top-10 best matched countries. The students would look at the top-10 options and pick out the country that their flag belonged to.

Students engrossed in drawing the maps

This exercise not only helped them learn about the different countries and flags in a fun way, but also gave them a taste of how a machine can be trained to perform such an activity. The idea is to tickle these young minds and set them thinking. After all, good things start when you begin to think!!

Be your own hero! - FREE 7-days online Self-Defense workshops for women | Colorss

Be your own hero! @ 6th Jan 2014; 9:00 am UTC+05:30
With Colorss foundation’s 7-day Online Self Defense classes

In today’s world, women are faced with danger and violence throughout their lives. We don’t choose to be a victim, but we can choose how we respond to these situations. Self-Defense is about learning the basic physical skills to be able to fight off attackers and reach safety. But it’s also about gaining empowerment and confidence. It’s about standing up and saying, I can protect myself, I refuse to be intimidated.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the time nor money to attend self-defense classes. So the Colorss foundation, a NGO based in Baroda, Pune and Ajmer in India, has come up with a novel idea: an online, 7 day self-defense workshop, to enable all women, from across the globe, to learn the necessary skills to remain calm and fight back against attackers.  The classes will take place on 6th Jan 2014 via the Colorss foundation’s facebook page [events section], in an interactive fashion.

Click on this link [https://www.facebook.com/events/255529674604610/]  to directly go to the event section - don't forget to join and invite those whom you feel will benefit from this workshop.

Participants can easily ask questions to the teacher via the internet, and benefit from the knowledge imparted from the comfort of their home, wherever they are in the world.

Join in, and become your own hero !

Volunteering at Colorss

Volunteers are the constant support to Colorss. But, what exactly are the volunteers doing? How are they doing it? and why are they doing it! These are all those infinite questions that many people think about or ask.  Well,  it's better that we hear the volunteers sharing their experiences! It gives more clarity to the subject 'volunteering' and the 'content' of joy felt by them.

This video would also help all those new volunteers/interns who are planning to support Colorss. Watch this video wherein our volunteers are sharing themselves.  As Colorss continues to make great strides on the social front, let’s take a vow to contribute in whatsoever manner possible to reach out to people in our communities and societies to enhance, empower and energize them.

"If you want love or if you want to give back love”, then you are all set to join the social bandwagon!

We are always there to answer your questions – we are here to make things simple.  Are you joining us! Why don’t you share us – it’s also a great volunteering service you can do! Well the choice is absolutely yours!

Celebrating 4 Colorss-filled Years! | Colorss Foundation

On the 15th of September this year, Pune was witness to the 4th Anniversary Celebrations of Colorss. Colorss foundation commemorated this occasion by organizing a flashmob [on 14th of September 2012] to perform at Symbiosis Law School around noon time. Later that evening around 7pm, the same mob performed in Pheonix Marketcity, Pune.

The flashmob was organised by the combined efforts of almost 50 participants who were all proud of the fact that they had managed to come up with an innovative idea to spread their cause. As Sweksha Ballabh puts it, “From practicing all day and night for the flash mob, to performing it in front of over 100 people, the excitement that this event has brought to our lives is splendid. The event was very well planned and organized by an amazing team of volunteers. I am so glad that I got a chance to be a part of such a noble event”.

Aditi, who is a first year student in Symbiosis chimes in, “15th September, 2012 was when we realized that working for a good cause can come with loads of fun, frolic, and dance. It was not just about the dance in the end or the socializing that was inevitable, it came with immense satisfaction. Having worked with Colorss Foundation in its various other projects, this one was definitely awesome”.

Even the audience were left amazed by the team’s performance. A participant who was witness to the flashmob stated that, “The flash mob was a unique way to create awareness about the cause and about Colorss Foundation. It was an inspiration to all those who took part”. Some of the many faces behind this event include Nikita Puri, Abraham Verghese, Dhiraj Khatri, Stuti Prasad and Nikita Lamba.

The next day afternoon, Colorss foundation continued the celebrations by organising a Walkathon from Symbiosis Law School to Pune Central, University Road. The Walkathon which covered a distance of approximately 5 kilometres saw about 50 participants who covered this distance with the knowledge that their effort was spent in raising awareness about a worthy cause.

For photo-updates click on these links: FlashmobWalkathon

Although the celebrations are in the past now, Colorss Foundation has found a new lease of life in all the efforts that its volunteers put in for the event and is now fuelled with the positive energy it created to go through another year filled with the aim of reaching out to more underprivileged kids!

“Who says you can have problems and you can’t smile also?”

Definitely you can…I saw and learnt this from these small kids who although came from a weak socioeconomic background, often separated families still had a smile on their faces and zeal to learn and change the way their life was.

While they were introducing themselves I noticed that they had family problems, e. g death of a parent or separated families. Most of the mothers worked in other houses doing the household chores to earn a living or fathers worked in factories or buildings as laborers.

It was an urge to teach small children which made me to join Colorss as a volunteer. My task which seemed to be very easy to me initially turned out to be a challenge for me. I was supposed to take a 45 min class, making children of class 6-9 standard write articles on a few topics.

I started with an article on My Ambition, where I had not only to explain the meaning of ambition to children but also had to assist eachPriyanka_MS of them in framing sentences ,making them spell every word properly and translating their thoughts from Hindi to English. This took 30 min for me and there was hardly any time left for any other activity. It was a kind of surprise for me to see children of 8th grade unable to  spell  “will”  “have”  “doctor”  “because”.  I felt the presence of a loop hole in the education system where students of an English medium school were not well versed in spellings and general English.

I thought of doing it another way. Next day I divided them into teams and told them to ask spellings from the opponent team. This sense of competition made some of them to find difficult words from their text books such as “environment” and learn them. This little effort of the children was encouraging for me. I also introduced some games in the class such as “Bring a thing” where students had to bring specific objects from their teammates such as “A black Reynolds pen or a paper boat”. Although I could not work for a long time as my vacations were going to be over, but it was an experience I would cherish forever.Something definitely needs to be done somewhere and Colorss is an attempt to do it. After joining Colorss as a volunteer, with Anand sir’s support I was more than comfortable and enjoyed every bit of work. Anand sir’s briefing of everything about children, their background, talents, general behavorial tendencies were helpful to know children better. I would like to thank Anand Sir for giving me the opportunity and believing in me. It was something very different and satisfying I could have done in 4 years of my college life. I enjoyed it and learnt a lot from it.

Joy on their faces was something we can never forget | Colors of Life ~ Baroda

“The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.”  Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy

When we first joint colors we didn’t know what to expect from the children. We didn't know how much they knew, what they would be interested in or how they would interact with us. We weren't even sure how we should interact with them. Therefore, our initial classes were not productive. The children did not stay interested in our classes for long and we began to have problems with the attendance. The boys would refuse to talk to us, preferring to talk among them, the girls were shy and we had difficulty in connecting with all of them.

After three months of fruitless discussions, us pestering them to write and them demanding to go out, we finally decided to change our approach for lack of satisfactory results. We spoke to our teachers and mentors and unanimously came up with the idea of doing more activities with the children. Since then, we have done a variety of activities with them like the ‘hero game’. In this, we asked each child to think of his/her favorite film character and tell us how they would respond to certain given situations.

This helped us to understand what they admire in their heroes and it made them think about what they would do in the same situation. We also conducted a quiz o Indian states and capitals. Though we had asked them to prepare beforehand, most of them didn’t bother. When we gave the teams which won kites as a prize, the joy on their faces was something we can never forget. They were genuinely so happy! Some of the others even came up to us and told us that they would come prepared next time. After months of frustration and disappointment with our work, we felt like we had finally achieved something!

Now, we feel more confident about our plans for the future. Though we had broken the ice some time ago, it is finally getting warmer.

“ENHANCING” LIVES ~ Project Enhance

“ENHANCING” LIVES

Education is the key aspect that helps to build a child’s future. However education confined to the realms of textbooks and notebooks does not make the child ready to face the challenges of the world. Overall development of a child is of utmost importance for survival in the world of cut-throat competition. Thus providing basic elementary education to poor and underprivileged children is not enough to ensure a good future for them.

PROJECT ENHANCE uses sports and creative arts to brighten the world of children and contribute towards their overall development. Reaching out to the girl child is of utmost importance to universalize elementary

The project is currently carried out at Pune Municipality Schools

  • Mahadji Shinde High School with 51 girls from 5th to 9th grade.
  • Dr. Ambedkar Memorial School with 56 girls from 6th and 9th grade.

Both schools are in Pune Cantonment Board, Pune

Children take part in 30 minutes of martial arts and creative arts twice a week. This helps reduce stress, increase stamina, build confidence, developing a spirit of team work and makes education more interesting. In addition to this, professionals give the children talks on topics including body language, careers, family dynamics, communication skills and more. The result of this project is children who are disciplined, self-confident and perhaps most importantly, happy.

Women are given a secondary status in our society. Education of such a kind would help them let go off the inhabitations that hamper the development and growth of the girl child. After all they have to grow up and become women of substance, and this initiative of the COLORSS FOUNDATION helps them achieve this feat.

This novel idea that goes beyond bookish knowledge and helps improve and empower the girl child. All it needs is your contribution and time to touch new heights and change more lives.

LET US ALL COME TOGETHER AND MAKE LIVES FOR THESE CHILDREN A BETTER PLACE SO THAT ONE DAY THEY CAN MAKE THE NATION PROUD.

Calling Volunteers for Project 'Colors of Life' at Navprerna - a care club of Navrachana School, Baroda - Gujarat

Project 'Colors of Life' provides an answer to one of our nation's most troubling problems. Although more children are staying in school than in previous years, there are still too many students dropping out, even at the very earliest levels. This problem is especially prevalent among the poor and the disabled. Some studies estimate that as many as 50% of children will drop out before finishing the higher secondary stage. More than half of all children leave school before ninth grade. To reduce these rates, we have to figure out why so many children aren't finishing their studies.

Project 'Colors of Life' is going to start for the students of Navprerna a care-club of Navrachana School, Vadodara Gujarat. `NAVPRERNA`a programme to educate Less Privileged - a care-club of Navrachana School. The children come from slums of Sama Village. The women particiapnts of 'Project Urja - igniting the fire' our first vocational training program started in Baroda, Gujarat also belong to the slums of Sama Village.

Students of 6th and 7th grade would be the part of our Project 'Colors of Life' and we aim to launch the first E-zine of Baroda chapter on 15th August.

We are requesting volunteers to join us at Navrachana School. The timings are 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm on weekdays (twice a week - days would be confirmed soon) and on weekends i.e Saturday (1st and 3rd - 4:00pm to 5:30 pm)

Colorss Foundation and its projects in detail

Colorss Foundation is a registered trust in India working towards the well-being of underprivileged children by integrating arts and technology. Some of the programs conducted by Colorss are 'One of its kinds'. They help in making these children self-confident and esteemed individuals. Our volunteers come from different corners of the globe; they work with a single motto making Colorss a NGO which is true to its name and deeds. At Colorss we all have a common belief; small steps lead to big changes. Therefore the activities that we perform have a long lasting impression in an individual's life.

A presentation that talk's about its projects.. please have a look.

Project Enhance uses sport and the arts as tools to promote physical well-being while improving mental health. Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder; rather, it is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.

In India, even today girl child is considered as a liability and is often ignored; even harassed and molested. Project Enhance is targeted at empowering the girl child through a blend of martial arts and creative arts resulting into increased self-confidence and improved academic performance as a result.

Objectives:
  • To empower girl child
  • Develop discipline to achieve mutual respect and understanding
  • Develop trust ,confidence, cooperation and togetherness
  • Increase attention span

Please watch this presentation for more information on this project and feedback of our student.

Project 'Colors of Life' provides an answer to one of our nation's most troubling problems. More than half of all children leave school before ninth grade. To reduce these rates, we have to figure out why so many children aren't finishing their studies.

For the most part, children drop out, or are taken out of school by their parents, because they think that school is irrelevant. Many families see school as a bad investment — they'd rather have their children earning money or caring for younger siblings. But by leaving school early, children often fail to realize
their full potential; innate skills and abilities are lost by neglect or by failure to explore and foster talents and interests.

If children and their families could see how education will bring much greater economic benefit than might otherwise be gained in the short term, without proper schooling, they would almost invariably prefer to complete their studies.

Objectives:
  • Motivating children to pursue further education
  • Reducing the number of school dropouts
  • Empowering children, developing pride and responsibility in work
  • Enhancing leadership quality
